Supercharged 2012 Audi A6 3.0 TFSI Pulley Upgrade

The 3.0 litre TFSI V6 is one of Audi’s most rewarding engines to work with. With its Eaton supercharger mounted neatly on top of the engine, it responds exceptionally well to carefully selected upgrades. In this case, we carried out a supercharger pulley upgrade on a 2012 Audi A6 to increase boost and unlock additional performance.

Why Upgrade the Supercharger Pulley?

The factory pulley is designed to balance performance, reliability and emissions compliance. By fitting a smaller supercharger pulley, we increase the rotational speed of the blower, which in turn increases boost pressure and power output.

However, this is not a simple bolt-on job. Precision is critical.

Precision Fitment – 0.05mm Matters

This pulley upgrade required an interference fit of just 0.05mm. That level of tolerance means the installation must be carried out carefully and accurately.

Rather than using a generic approach, we used a controlled heating method:

  • Heated the new pulley evenly using a propane torch

  • Monitored temperature with an infrared thermometer

  • Brought the pulley to approximately 350°C

  • Installed while expanded for a precise, tight fit

This method ensures:

  • Correct expansion without overheating

  • Secure seating on the supercharger shaft

  • Long-term reliability under load

Heating and installing components like this is a fully functional and proven method when done correctly. The key is temperature control and experience.

The Process

  1. Supercharger removed from the engine

  2. Factory pulley removed using specialised puller tools

  3. New performance pulley measured and prepared

  4. Controlled heating to exact temperature

  5. Precision installation with correct alignment

  6. Reassembly and inspection

Every step was completed with care to ensure no damage to the supercharger nose or bearings.

Recommended Supporting Upgrades

While a pulley upgrade delivers noticeable gains, we strongly recommend supporting modifications for best results:

  • Injector upgrade for improved fuel delivery

  • Proper ECU tune matched to the pulley ratio

  • Health check of cooling system and intercooler performance

A correct tune is essential. Increasing boost without calibration can cause lean conditions, knock or long-term engine stress.

When done properly, the 3.0 TFSI becomes a completely different car – stronger mid-range torque, sharper throttle response and a far more engaging drive.

The Result

The Audi A6 3.0 TFSI is already a refined and capable vehicle. With this pulley upgrade and proper tuning, it delivers performance closer to S and even RS territory while maintaining everyday drivability.

We genuinely like this engine platform. It responds well when treated correctly and set up properly.
