Audi SQ5 Water Pump Replacement

This Audi SQ5 came into our workshop with clear signs of a cooling system issue. The owner had noticed coolant loss and temperature behaviour that was not quite right, both common early indicators of a failing water pump on these models.

On modern Audi performance vehicles like the SQ5, the cooling system plays a critical role in protecting the engine, turbochargers, and ancillary components. Any weakness in the system needs to be addressed properly, not patched.

The Issue

After inspection, we confirmed the water pump was leaking and no longer operating as intended. On the Audi SQ5, the water pump is located at the front of the engine and is integrated into a tightly packaged cooling system. Failure can lead to:

  • Coolant leaks

  • Engine overheating

  • Reduced heating performance

  • Risk of secondary damage if left unresolved

Because of the vehicle’s layout, access requires partial front-end disassembly to reach the pump safely and correctly.

Our Diagnosis Process

Before proceeding with the repair, we carried out a full cooling system assessment, including:

  • Pressure testing the cooling system

  • Visual inspection for leaks and residue

  • Checking related hoses and components

  • Verifying fault data where applicable

This confirmed the water pump as the root cause, with no underlying issues elsewhere in the system.

The Repair

The repair involved removing the necessary front-end components to gain access to the water pump assembly. We then:

  • Removed the failed water pump

  • Installed a new OEM-spec replacement unit

  • Replaced seals and related hardware as required

  • Reassembled all components to factory specification

  • Refilled the cooling system with the correct Audi-approved coolant

  • Bled and pressure-tested the system

Once complete, the vehicle was road tested and rechecked to ensure stable operating temperatures and zero coolant loss.

The Result

The Audi SQ5 was returned to the owner with the cooling system functioning correctly and reliably. Engine temperatures stabilised, coolant loss was resolved, and the vehicle was back to operating as intended.

Why Proper Repairs Matter on Performance Audis

High-performance tuned Audi models place significant demands on their cooling systems. Using the correct parts, following manufacturer procedures, and taking the time to diagnose issues thoroughly helps avoid repeat failures and protects the engine long-term.

If your Audi is showing signs of coolant loss, overheating, or warning messages, early diagnosis can make all the difference.
