BMW 650i Rocker Cover Gasket Replacement

This BMW 650i was booked in due to oil leaks and a noticeable oil smell after driving, a very common issue on BMW models fitted with the N62B48 V8 engine. As these engines age, rocker cover gaskets harden and shrink, allowing oil to escape onto hot engine components.

Addressing these leaks early is important to avoid further issues, including smoke from the exhaust area, degraded hoses, and damage to surrounding components.

The Issue

On inspection, oil residue was present around the rocker covers and along the sides of the engine. On the N62 engine, rocker cover gasket failure can lead to:

  • Oil leaks down the sides of the engine

  • Burning oil smells through the cabin

  • Oil contamination of ignition components

  • Increased risk of secondary failures if ignored

Due to the tight packaging of the V8 engine bay, access to the rocker covers is restricted and requires careful disassembly.

Our Diagnosis Process

Before carrying out the repair, we performed a full inspection to confirm the source of the leak, including:

  • Cleaning and inspecting leak areas

  • Checking for oil pooling around ignition components

  • Inspecting related seals and breather components

  • Confirming no additional oil leaks were present

This ensured the rocker cover gaskets were the primary cause and that the repair would fully resolve the issue.

The Repair

Replacing rocker cover gaskets on the BMW N62B48 is a detailed job. The repair involved:

  • Removing intake and ancillary components for access

  • Carefully removing both rocker covers

  • Cleaning all mating surfaces thoroughly

  • Installing new OEM-spec rocker cover gaskets

  • Replacing seals and grommets as required

  • Reassembling components to factory specifications

Once reassembled, the engine was cleaned, started, and rechecked to confirm there were no remaining leaks.

The Result

The BMW 650i was returned with dry rocker covers, no oil smell, and a clean engine bay. The oil leaks were fully resolved, restoring proper engine operation and preventing further oil-related issues.

Why These Repairs Matter on BMW V8 Engines

BMW V8 engines like the N62 are refined but complex. Oil leaks are common as seals age, and repairing them correctly requires experience with BMW-specific layouts and procedures. Proper gasket replacement helps protect engine components and maintain long-term reliability.

If your BMW is showing signs of oil leaks or burning oil smells, timely inspection and repair can prevent much larger problems down the track.
